As one of the of the first recreation facilities in the country to pursue LEED® certification, the Western Washington University Wade King Student Recreation Center incorporated a number of sustainable strategies. The primary strategy consisted of careful design to maximize daylighting, while the use of sun shades, landscape features and highly efficient mechanical and electrical systems further supported the sustainable goals. Additional care was taken to chose sustainable materials and finishes and water efficient landscaping was used throughout the site. Further attentions was paid to utilize efficient mechanical and electrical systems, water efficient plumbing fixtures, and maintaining healthy indoor air quality.
