The Camas Community Center design focused on taking advantage of its sloping site to frame dramatic views of Lacamas Lake and a new community park. The 64,000 sf, two story facility was planned with a two-court gymnasium, running track, rock climbing wall, leisure and lap pools and community rooms including a teen center, a senior center, kitchens and meeting rooms. The building was nestled into the wooded hillside and its form was broken down into smaller elements to allow it to harmoniously blend into its park setting. Daylighting and natural materials informed the architectural character of the Community Center; wood, stone and glass became the main materials employed. The preliminary budget for the Community Center was $18 million.
