The 16,000 sf Health Education Building is a key component of the Pierce Puyallup long range plan for the development of comprehensive community college campus. Together with the College Center building completed in 2004, it creates an environment that encourages students to stay on this commuter campus throughout the day and into the evening. The project was student-funded and student leaders played a key role in a highly collaborative programming and design process to realize a solution unique for the campus. The layout centers around a two level weight training room that overlooks the forest that surrounds the campus. A natural wood screen forms the backdrop to an open stair and balcony that creates a dynamic, transparent facility. A second level cardio equipment space projects over the entry and creates an evening beacon facing the main campus. A large multi-purpose room houses a range of fitness and movement classes.  An adjacent classroom is a key component for the health education programming for the facility.  Administrative spaces, laundry and equipment rooms are serviced directly behind the reception desk, and the Men’s and Women’s locker rooms utilize natural daylighting. Opsis served as design architect, with MSGS Architects as executive architect for the project.
