opsis architecture

The 26,000 sf Washburne Hall is located at the core of Pacific University’s campus. Built in 1964, the building accurately reflects the technology and design of its time. While the facility serves as the center of student life—housing campus dining, student services offices, offices, multi-purpose rooms, a student store, the mail room, and other campus-wide non-academic functions—it no longer met the needs of Pacific’s growing student body and Faculty. Opsis worked with the University to re-envision the student union and establish Washburne Hall as a vibrant home-away-from-home for students. We began by examining the existing building and adjacent site conditions for opportunities for improvement, while also working toward meeting campus sustainability goals. Phase one of the project included space programming, interior renovations, integrating new food service spaces, as well as upgrades to MEP, technology, security, and utility systems. The project’s future phase two will include the design of an anticipated two-story energy efficient addition, creating a “Landscape for Learning”, while simultaneously establishing meaningful open space and a relationship with the adjacent newly-constructed student residence hall.
