The Teaching and Learning Center / Commons project includes a new student center and academic building at the center of the campus. An essential synergy is created by combining the living functions of the commons with learning spaces in 30 technology and media enhanced classrooms. The existing 51,000 sf University Classroom Building on the site was used as the structural framework for a completely new mechanical, electrical, interior finish and exterior enclosure systems. The brick, glazing patterns, and roof forms continue the vocabulary of the adjacent Commons to the east.

A three-level stair hall connects the existing split-level floors and opens the facility into the Commons’ central atrium. Classrooms feature a variety of sizes and formats ranging from 25 to 100 seats in sloped and flat configurations. A second-level instructional technology center contains service points for both faculty and students to check-out and service computer and audio-visual equipment. On the ground floor a new digital media center provides students and faculty with image-based services. The architect of record for the project is Design West with Opsis Architecture as the design architect. The project was completed in 2005.
