The original 197,000 sf, 12,000-seat Veterans Memorial Coliseum building is a landmark in modernist design by the international firm of SOM. The $30-million renovation project addresses numerous MEP, ADA, public space and support space improvements. New restrooms, concessions, team locker rooms and a new ice arena for the professional Winterhawks hockey team will create a state-of-the-art events facility. Improvements in access will streamline visitor circulation and life-safety exiting during events. The reduction of operating costs and energy use is a primary consideration with improvements to the building envelope, roof top photovoltaics and the development of a Rose Quarter District energy System. The multi-use facility hosts over 150 events per year requiring a complex, phased construction process to minimize operational disruptions. Construction will begin in March 2012
