A regional venue and attraction for animal conservation, culture and exploration, the Oregon Zoo sought to reimagine its main entry plaza and create a new, weather-protected plaza space near the polar exhibit to excite and elevate the arrival of the zoo’s 1.5 million annual visitors.
Location: Portland, OR
The renovation of the Cascade Crest Deck entry will transform an underutilized space into a functional, welcoming area that will serve as both a gathering space and an event venue. By reimagining the layout, integrating it with the existing architecture and enhancing it with durable, natural wood materials rooted in Pacific Northwest character, the design will create an inviting space that encourages connection, supports flexible programming and elevates the arrival experience for visitors.
The addition of the covered Polar Plaza will provide a versatile space that supports year-round use, offering a more comfortable and accessible environment for gatherings, events and respite.
Working closely with the zoo and Metro, the project team will analyze current needs in both areas, evaluating buildings, facilities, guest and staff experiences, animal habitats and site infrastructure.
