For the renowned Oregon Health & Science University, a natural emphasis is placed on study and research as students prepare for one of the most demanding fields of work. When Opsis was retained to create student union space in an existing underused campus recreation facility, our team recognized an opportunity to address the needs of the “whole” student, providing a place for students to relax, take a break from their studying and have social interaction. The multi-phase undertaking created a multimedia room, a new bookstore, a game room and lounge, an upgraded gymnasium, and renovated restrooms and ADA upgrades.

The team turned an outdated squash court into a multimedia room for students to relax, take a break from studying, and have social interaction. Benches, bean bags, and mobile ottomans encourage students to lounge, socialize, and relax, but also provide sufficient seating for a lecture or formal presentation.

The space adjacent to the multi-media room functions as a study area and group meeting space. Local artists are invited to display their work and the space becomes an in-between area for informal learning and social interaction.
