UW IMA Locker Rooms & Pool Upgrade Earns 2025 DBIA National Award of Merit

The LEED Gold University of Washington IMA Locker Room and Pool Upgrade earned a 2025 Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) National Award of Merit in the rehab/renovation/restoration category.

Through design-build delivery with Hoffman Construction, the project marked the first major renovation of the Intramural Activities facility in decades. The upgraded facility embraces sustainability and inclusivity while continuing to serve the university’s daily visitors.

The team added gender-inclusive locker rooms, expanded the existing natatorium to 14 swim lanes with upgraded efficient pool systems and refreshed amenities throughout. The all-gender locker rooms move away from traditional gender-coded palettes to create a more welcoming and inclusive experience.

The sustainable design of the locker room was guided by an eco-charette with stakeholders and biophilic design principles. Upgraded mechanical and pool systems improved long-term efficiency and performance. The facility aims to meet the needs of today’s students, faculty and staff while modeling resilient and inclusive design for the future.

Congratulations to the entire project team on this national recognition.
